Darwenside Dental Practice ‘Highly Commended’
The Darwenside dental team were absolutely made up to receive the ‘Highly Commended’ award at the BDIA Dental Showcase 2019, for our efforts in tackling oral health issues within the Blackburn with Darwen region, specifically through our work on the Smile4Life initiative. The event took place at the NEC in Birmingham and is the biggest dental exhibition in the UK.
Recent evidence highlighted that it was alarmingly clear that children from Blackburn with Darwen have some of the worst decayed teeth in the country. To tackle this, we set to bringing our Smile4Life campaign to life, an initiative which aims to help improve the dental health of 0-5-year olds in the Darwen area and gain a better reputation for healthy smiles. By engaging children from a young age, as well as their parents, we have seen some superb results from within the community.
Working in partnership with the Health Marketing team at Creativeworld, the Smile4Life initiative has seen us produce a rigorous social media campaign, leaflets, Goodie Bags, Teeth Cleaning Charts and more to encourage parents to take a safeguarding approach to their child’s oral health. In addition to this came the introduction of our practice mascot and many visits from local primary schools.
Here’s what Gillian Kelly, Public Health Development Manager from Blackburn with Darwen Council had to say about the campaign:
‘The public health team within the council, as well as myself personally, are extremely encouraged by the amazing work your practice has done under the Smile4Life ‘Starting Well’ campaign. The enthusiasm shown by yourself and your staff, to actively go out into the community – both to early years’ settings and children’s centres, encouraging young children to attend your practice – and also have children and early years’ staff attend your practice to show how the staff and your practice are very welcoming to these little children and their parents, is inspiring’.
It’s an honour to have been awarded this special commendation which is truly a testament to the hard work of our team at the practice, who all go above and beyond to provide the best oral health support they can to our patients. We look forward to continuing to work hard to promote healthy smiles within our community and providing the best possible service we can to all our wonderful clientele.
